So couldn’t you lot tell me about this Show? Only Murders in the Building is really good TV. Part of me feels like this shouldn’t have worked. Martin Short and Steve Martin are a surefire classic combination but Selena Gomez??!! And yet the chemistry feels right. They bring the old school and seem to get funnier each season – could Martin Short bring anymore comedy camp to the mix? Selena Gomez brings the younger understated cool without making it too cringe.
The series is based on a series of murders in The Arconia building that houses a number of tenants with quirks. The older of the trio are Charles Haden-Savage an ex-primetime TV star and Oliver Putnam – a Broadway director that had his last great theatre production go bust. Gomez plays Mabel Mora a young loner and all three set up a podcast to solve a crime in their building.
There are star-studded appearances galore and I’m not sure if it feels like a bunch of mates doing Martin and Short a favour or if people really love the concept… or both. The last series felt like a return to Saturday Am-Dram club at your local church and I couldn’t decide if it was hyper camp or had lost its way a little.
Series 3 saw the return of Jane Lynch (you’d know her if you see her) appears as Haden-Savage’s unlikely stunt double who has stolen his first wife. Then you’ll see the awesome newbie James Caverly who brilliantly characterises the only deaf character in the series – Theo Dimas. In series 1 they have a whole episode with one line of spoken/ verbalised dialogue which centers the whole epiosde around his characters perception of the world. It’s fun and fumny television.
I sort of hope that they don’t rush the series; because there is a level of quality in the writing there that really doesn’t diminish if the star-studded guest characters aren’t there. Overall, this is a great series. It feels different from most TV and certainly adds to the genre of crime fiction…
*Only Murders in the Building* is now on Disney Channel or Hulu
